Information

Jyväskylä Festival (Jyväskylän Kesä) is the oldest continuously running city festival in the Nordic countries. Launched in 1955, the event quickly rose to become one of Europe’s most significant summer events. Jyväskylä has hosted the world’s leading composers, architects, musicians, filmmakers, philosophers, researchers, dancers, and theater makers. Since its inception, the festival’s core has been high-quality artistic content, the presentation of new works and artists, social themes, and an organizational philosophy that engages the audience.

This year's Jyväskylä Festival will be held July 1–7, 2026, with the theme wisdom. You can find the program introduction and event tickets on these pages!

Values

Jyväskylän Kesän’s values are equality, responsibility, and high-quality content. These values guide all of the festival’s activities.

Equality

Our goal for Jyväskylä Festival is to be an open space where everyone can come together on equal terms. We want every visitor, performer, and staff member to be able to participate in Jyväskylä Festival events safely and equally, being themselves with all their diverse backgrounds and characteristics.

We recognize that ongoing work is necessary to achieve these goals. A safer festival and the development of an improved operational culture are processes that require long-term, active effort.

We promise

  • We take harassment, discrimination, and inappropriate behavior seriously. We intervene in problematic situations.
  • We are ready to discuss the festival’s values and operating practices with Jyväskylä Festival's stakeholders.
  • We welcome feedback on our operations. We see feedback as an opportunity to develop the festival's practices. You can also provide feedback anonymously.
  • We use clear language in our communication. Information is also available in English on our website.
  • We are developing a more comprehensive listing of accessibility information for event venues. We update the accessibility information annually.

In recent years, we have promoted the realization of equality through the following measures, for example

  • Our staff has received training on safety and harassment. The festival’s working group is committed to reviewing and improving Jyväskylä Festival's operating procedures.
  • A risk assessment has been prepared for the festival week's events from the perspective of safe space and integrity.
  • We are networking to discuss practices with other players in the event industry.
  • All staff working during the festival will be briefed on Jyväskylä Festival's equality policies. Staff working at our events know how to respond to incidents of harassment.

Throughout the festival week, a contact form will be available for anyone to report harassment or inappropriate treatment they have experienced or witnessed at Jyväskylä Festival events. You can fill out the form anonymously or, if you prefer, ask a designated representative from the Jyväskylä Festival production team to contact you by phone or email, whichever you choose.

You can access the contact form here.

  • During the Park Festival, a harassment liaison will be on duty at the festival grounds. You can contact them if you feel you have been harassed at Jyväskylä Festival events. The harassment liaison is not a law enforcement official; if you suspect a crime has been committed, you must always contact the police.
  • Discussions with harassment contact persons are confidential, and no action will be taken without the person's consent.
  • Puistojuhlat -festival toilets are not gendered.

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the UN Association's Safe Space principles before the festival. The Safe Space principles are a good tool for how each of us can influence the atmosphere and safety of events through our own actions. Learn about the principles of safe space here.

Jyväskylä Festival is committed to developing more sustainable practices and taking into account the environment and the environmental impact of our activities. We aim to reduce the festival’s environmental footprint in the following ways, for example:

  • Jyväskylä Festival has an environmental plan that is updated annually. The environmental plan guides our decisions on environmental matters.
  • We choose local partners who share our values whenever possible.
  • We utilize existing venues instead of building temporary ones.
  • We avoid the use of single-use materials and focus on recycling and reusing materials.
  • All our back-of-house catering is vegetarian. We require that vegetarian options also be available in the lunch restaurants for staff and artists.
  • We are participating in the festival organizers” peer network ”Transition Towards Carbon Neutral Operations," where we aim for carbon neutrality for festivals.
  • We are collaborating closely with the University of Jyväskylä's resource wisdom community, JYU.WISDOM. Our software addresses current environmental topics based on academic, researched knowledge. The festival is an opportunity to bring these topics into the public eye and into societal discussion, also outside the academic world.

We welcome feedback and development suggestions regarding responsibility, equality, and other themes. You can send feedback by email to kesa@jyvaskylankesa.fi. We will also open a feedback form on this page, through which you can leave feedback or report a discrepancy, anonymously if you wish.
