Sustainable home design – We bring nature home

In the summer of 2026, the Tahiti Gallery at Säynätsalo Town Hall will feature an exhibition by Jyväskylä-based designer Kati Hienonen, titled "Design for Waste-Free Homes – We Bring Nature Home," which examines the possibilities of design as part of a more sustainable future.

The exhibition centers on a home textile collection designed from Finnish sheep wool, based on circular economy principles. The entire lifecycle of the material is considered from the design phase: from raw material to use and back into the cycle. At the same time, the exhibition highlights safe materials and manufacturing processes that do not leave harmful chemicals in the environment.

In Hienonen's work, design is not just about designing objects, but about finding ways to respond to the major questions of our time. The exhibition examines how material choices, production solutions, and everyday aesthetics can support the transition towards a lower-carbon and more responsible way of life.

Hienonen sums it up. Kati Hienonen has provided consulting services based on future-oriented and sustainability-focused thinking for companies such as Iittala, Marimekko, and Sitra. She also served as an expert in the DWoC (Design Driven Value Chains in the World of Cellulose) project, implemented by Tekes in 2013–2014, which explored new applications for cellulose-based materials.

Launched in 2016, Hienonen's Bonden collection is based on the circular economy and utilizes Finnish sheep wool and plant dyes. The collection was the first in Finland to use Finnish sheep wool, previously considered waste, for industrial weaving. In 2024, Bonden was selected for the international Green Product Award initiative, which recognizes sustainable products, materials, and concepts across various industries.

The Tahiti Gallery exhibition brings a contemporary perspective to the Säynätsalo Town Hall, showcasing how design can unite beauty, practicality, and ecological responsibility.
