{"id":14907,"date":"2026-07-26T10:40:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T07:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jyvaskylankesa.fi\/?p=14907"},"modified":"2026-07-26T11:08:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T08:08:20","slug":"alvar-aalto-jyvaskyla-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jyvaskylankesa.fi\/en\/2026\/07\/26\/alvar-aalto-jyvaskylan-kesassa\/","title":{"rendered":"Alvar Aalto and Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n Kes\u00e4 \u2013 a festival that lives inside a World Heritage Site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 26 July 2026, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed the <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1752\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aalto Works<\/a> series on the World Heritage List. <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1752\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1752\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aalto Works<\/a> Three of its 13 sites are in Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4: the Aalto campus on Seminaarinm\u00e4ki, S\u00e4yn\u00e4tsalo Town Hall and the Muuratsalo Experimental House. For Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n Kes\u00e4 \u2013 the Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 Festival \u2013 these are not merely landmarks. By the end of the decade, the festival programme could proudly note that the event was held \"for the first time in its entirety\" amid the new buildings. The oldest continuously running urban cultural festival in the Nordic countries does not simply perform at a World Heritage Site \u2013 it has lived inside one all its life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Aalto took the stage himself<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aalto was no distant patron. The festival programmes of 1957\u20131966 show him stepping up to the podium time and again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1957<\/strong> \u2013 a lecture on \"Humanism and Architecture\" at the festival's closing ceremony in the college's main hall<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1961<\/strong> \u2013 a lecture on the planning problems of city centres at the visual arts days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1962<\/strong> \u2013 The festival's Aalto Year: opening lecture, the opening of an architecture exhibition, and a two-day architecture seminar, which also featured Swiss architectural historian Sigfried Giedion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1964<\/strong> \u2013 A lecture titled \u201dProblems in Architecture\u201d at an international architecture and design seminar, where architect Aarne Ervi also spoke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1965<\/strong> \u2013 opening lecture for the theme year \u201dSociety in Architecture\u201d; one of the seminars dealt with Aalto's own architecture under the leadership of Professor Leonardo Mosso.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1966<\/strong> \u2013 Aalto personally presented his Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 city centre plans. As early as 1957, an excursion visited S\u00e4yn\u00e4tsalo Town Hall and Muurame Church, where an Italian vesper was sung. In 1962 architect Elissa Aalto herself presented S\u00e4yn\u00e4tsalo Town Hall to festival guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1966 programme carries the most delightful announcement of the era: \"Excursion to Aalto sites: S\u00e4yn\u00e4tsalo Town Hall, Muurame Church, Academician Aalto's motorboat. FIM 3.\" For three Finnish marks, visitors could also admire the master's own motorboat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tradition culminated in 1977, when the festival's theme was \"Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 \u2013 the City of Alvar Aalto\" and the programme included an entire Alvar Aalto Day: a bus excursion to Muurame Church, S\u00e4yn\u00e4tsalo Town Hall and the Muuratsalo Experimental House, which opened its doors to the public for the first time, guided by the architecture writer Pekka Suhonen and accompanied by a lecture from Aalto's close friend G\u00f6ran Schildt. Muuratsalo was no museum piece to Aalto \u2013 it was his own summer home, where he and Elissa spent their summers until his death in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The festival's stages are Aalto's halls<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The connection was never just programming \u2013 it was the walls around the event. The great hall of the university's main building, the Auditorium Maximum, has been the festival's principal stage for concerts and lectures from the 1950s to the present day. The Museum of Central Finland, completed in 1961, immediately became an exhibition venue, and the Alvar Aalto Museum has hosted festival exhibitions and concerts since the 1970s.\n<br \/><br \/>\nThe Alvar Aalto Museum was meant to be inaugurated during the 1973 festival \u2013 until a construction strike pushed the opening to the autumn. The following year's festival theme, fittingly, was 'Strike'.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hall even sparked a national incident. In 1963, a plaster relief that had been mounted on its brick wall \u2013 one Aalto himself considered out of place there \u2013 was \"kidnapped\" in protest and carried all the way to the Finnish Parliament in defence of Aalto's architecture. That summer's festival programme carried a full-page tribute with a message that endures: \"Alvar Aalto's architecture is immortal.\" The following summer the entire festival was dedicated to Aalto's city, and in 1979 Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n Kes\u00e4 hosted the first international Alvar Aalto Symposium \u2013 launched jointly by the Alvar Aalto Museum and the festival, drawing over 400 participants from 14 countries. The Symposium is still held every three years under the Alvar Aalto Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make your festival trip an Aalto trip<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">World Heritage status makes visible what festival guests have known for 70 years: <a href=\"https:\/\/visitjyvaskyla.fi\/en\/alvaraalto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 is a unique place<\/a> to experience architecture and culture together. A concert in Aalto's great hall, <a href=\"https:\/\/aalto2.museum\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a visit to the Aalto2 Museum Centre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aalto2.museum\/en\/guided-tour-destinations\/saynatsalo-town-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an excursion to S\u00e4yn\u00e4tsalo Town Hall<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alvaraalto.fi\/en\/location\/muuratsalo-experimental-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Muuratsalo Experimental House<\/a> \u2013 all in a single summer journey. Architecture \u201cpilgrims\u201d travel to the hall from as far away as Japan and Singapore, and every July, Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n Kes\u00e4 offers a reason to experience World Heritage as it should be experienced: alive and filled with art, conversation and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n Kes\u00e4 will be held July 7\u201313, 2027, with the theme <strong>Heritage<\/strong>.
